The voice actor’s identity is still under wraps, lending an element of mystery to this groundbreaking project.
Besides being a third-person shooter, 007 First Light tries to create the Bond cinematic experience we all adventure and love through the movies. The game will explore the complexities of Bond’s character, posing essential questions such as “Who is James Bond the young man, and what does it mean to be a 00 Agent?” It will challenge players to consider moral dilemmas with inquiries like “When do you do your duty?” and “Why do it in the first place?”
This fresh interpretation draws heavily from Daniel Craig’s more urban, action-heroic presentation. From the beginning, his portrayal has been signature in changing and redefining how we see the iconic secret agent today. Christian Elverdam, the creative director at IO Interactive, commented on their desire to develop the game in this way.
“If you want to really do this with high ambition, you have to look at the different Bond instalments and figure out what each of them tried to do, and then let that inform your own take,” – Christian Elverdam.
Elverdam also drove home the point that every incarnation of Bond is a product of the time in which it was developed.
“Every Bond is a Bond of their time, no matter how intentional you are. It’s unavoidable,” – Christian Elverdam.
This time around IO Interactive has made a Bond that’s “blandly handsome in a doll-like way,” according to Danika. This depiction is a dramatic shift in tone from the rougher portrayals in past films. The new game promises an arsenal of gadgets and death traps from the Roger Moore era. This nostalgic touch is sure to delight long-time fans of the franchise with this new addition.
To initiate the development process, IO Interactive contacted Eon Productions. Their development pitch wanted to recapture the perfect Bond formula. The studio first unveiled the game back in November 2020 under the code name of “Project 007.” As they refined their vision, it became “007 First Light.”
The recent moves regarding the James Bond franchise are the most noticeable steps Amazon has taken since acquiring MGM for $8.45 billion in March 2022. The tech giant is said to be pursuing other upcoming projects, such as picking Denis Villeneuve to direct the next James Bond film. This industry-changing development represents a game-changing first for the franchise. 007 First Light will be featuring the world’s most famous secret agent in his first-ever video game adventure before the upcoming film hits theaters.
Elverdam also emphasized how important it was to begin with Bond’s origin story, letting players discover the fundamental building blocks of his character.
“The way we went about it was to start with the origin. Because then we get to play with questions such as, ‘Who is James Bond the young man, and what does it mean to be a 00 Agent?’” – Christian Elverdam.
