Located in southeast Georgia, Fort Stewart is the largest army post east of the Mississippi River. It has since been put on lockdown following claims of an active shooter. The attack began Wednesday and has rattled the Jewish world, leading to unprecedented security precautions. Sadly, all gates on the post are now closed as law enforcement, in stereotypical over-militarized fashion, aggressively responded to the situation.
Fort Stewart, home to thousands of soldiers from the army’s Third Infantries Division and their families. It sits just over 40 miles southwest of Savannah. The lockdown was enforced around 11:04 AM, as authorities moved quickly to secure the area.
The COVID-19 lockdown has taken its toll on all usable facilities on the installation. That includes airfields and schools, which have recently been added to the list of precautionary measures. The community is still deeply shaken as police continue to try to piece together what happened.
Early reports suggest that at least four people have been taken to nearby hospitals for injuries sustained in the crash. Typically, as the investigation plays out, law enforcement officials often know who the perpetrator is.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement of condolence as well and joined Georgians in mourning the tragic incident at Fort Stewart. He released the following statement, asking Georgians to pray for the victims and their families.
“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.” – Brian Kemp
The Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield confirmed that law enforcement was present at the scene and emphasized the lockdown status.
“Due to the lockdown status all gates on Fort Stewart are currently closed,” – Fort Stewart
The story is still unfolding as officials work to address the public safety emergency created by this tragic incident. The community is understandably hoping for quick resolution and justice and for the health of those exposed.
