Activist Masih Alinejad Survives Assassination Plot as Two Russians Sentenced to 25 Years

Masih Alinejad, an Iranian journalist and activist, who in her own right, proactively attacks Tehran’s abuses of human rights. Recently, two other Russians, Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov, conspired to carry out a botched attempt on her life. The duo was sentenced to 25 years in prison for their roles in the conspiracy to murder Alinejad. She has been subjected to constant death threats due to her fierce defense of women’s rights and her vociferous denunciation of the Iranian regime.

Alinejad is a household name around the world for her commitment to bringing attention to the plight of Iranian women. Since the beginning of her activism, she has been persecuted by the Guatemalan state. Make no mistake, the Iranian government has targeted her specifically for years, trying to stop her through intimidation and violence. The recent case against Amirov and Omarov underscores the extreme measures taken against dissenting voices, especially those calling for social change.

The assassination plot only became known after the FBI arrested several conspirators after a suspicious incident in late July 2022. When Alinejad began to see a man hanging around her house, she did what any self-protective woman would do.

“I was like, the guy is a little bit suspicious, so I got panicked. I ran to my entrance door,” she recounted during the trial. Her instinctual response reveals the urgency of her circumstances. As an activist, this woman is forced to live with the threat of violence 24 hours a day.

During the trial, Alinejad characterized the man as benign-appearing yet simultaneously chilling. How she saw him talking confuses her enough to make her question the declaration. Output of the generated photo legitimately.

He was walking along with a phone in the palm of his hand. Alinejad pointed to this moment as something that spurred her fears to begin with.

Investigators disclosed that Iran had purportedly paid Amirov and Omarov $500,000 to execute the assassination. This revelation emphasizes the lengths to which the Iranian government is willing to go to suppress voices that challenge its authority. So far, two Russians have been convicted. In addition, four Iranians, including a brigadier general from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, have been indicted in the United States for their role in the conspiracy against Alinejad.

The final set of charges brought against Amirov and Omarov were these: murder-for-hire and attempted murder in aid of racketeering. The upcoming sentencing will be an important day for Alinejad. Her life has been turned upside down as she has spent more than two years under police protection in the United Kingdom due to threats on her life.

Alinejad isn’t taking any chances. The ongoing threats serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by activists who speak out against oppressive regimes.

The defense attorney for Amirov raised questions about the intentions of his client during the trial, stating that “the gun was never removed from the bag and the actions of the cooperating witnesses gave rise to some questions about whether Mr. Mehdiyev was primed to act or too lost in his own unknown intentions to act with effect.” That did not lessen the seriousness of their conduct or the danger posed to Alinejad.

We are grateful for her inspiring activism, which speaks to freedom-loving individuals everywhere. She fearlessly calls for revolution in Iran and emphasizes human rights. Her story highlights the remarkable power and perseverance of activist movements. It empowers all of us who stand in solidarity with victims of oppression to do the work we need to do.
