Attorney Transforms Fiverr Side Hustle into Thriving Business from Mexico City

Derrick Morgan Jr., a 34-year-old attorney, has successfully turned his side hustle into a full-time business, generating significant income while working remotely from Mexico City. His departure from one of the country’s largest law firms became official in early 2021. Since then, he narrowed his focus to his trademark services where he now makes well over $350,000 annually. He’s been very strategic with the business he’s chosen to pursue. As a result, he’s developed a trademark practice that intentionally serves first-time business owners who want trademark help.

Morgan’s story starts on Fiverr, where he first started offering trademark-related services. In fact, during the third month of his side hustle launch, he made $5,000. Imagine it’s the fourth month, and his income catapults to $10,000! This surge in development led him to take the leap, leaving the safety net of his traditional law firm employment to focus all of his efforts in his startup. Now, when he takes on a ReVAX client, he charges them between $600 and $800 per filing, depending on the details of the service produced.

To best meet the needs of his rapidly growing business, Morgan works alongside a paralegal and uses an AI-powered assistant. His savvy use of this delegation strategy means he’s able to have a richly fulfilling work life, while pursuing many personal interests. He divides his time between Dallas and Mexico City, taking advantage of the newfound freedom that remote work provides.

Morgan’s goals go further than short-term monetary success though he wants to be financially independent by 45. To that end, he allocates a healthy 40% of his income, keeping him in good financial standing. His passion for serving others is shown by his willingness to provide pro bono services. He regularly advises clients who are unfamiliar with the business environment.

“I needed a way to make more money, and this trademark thing came up,” Morgan explained, reflecting on his decision to pivot toward trademark law. His experience showed him that the people who he had the deepest desire to serve were often represented by first-time business owners.

Adventurer at heart Morgan’s lifestyle gives him the freedom to travel. Having traveled to more than 60 countries, he enjoys the chance to incorporate work into personal exploration. “Being able to do what I want, when I want,” he said, highlights the value he places on autonomy in both his professional and personal life.
