Authorities Investigate Alleged Child Abuse as Over 20 Kids Taken from Surrogate Parents

California authorities have taken custody of more than 20 children from Silvia Zhang, 38, and Guojun Xuan, 65, following allegations of abuse. Sadly, in the context of such success stories, one Indiana hospital recently shared a shocking story about a young couple’s two-month-old child. The infant sustained a traumatic head injury, allegedly after the newborn’s nanny violently shook the baby. The controversial incident led to a three-month investigation. In response, law enforcement took fifteen children from the couple’s Arcadia residence in May and discovered six other children at various locations.

Here’s the kicker—the children range in age from two months to 13 YEARS. Two-thirds of them are no more than one to three years old. Prosecutors say Zhang and Xuan are the legal parents of each child. The issues that were raised about the couple’s parenting style were extremely valid. This was indeed the case, after the infant suffered an injury but was left without medical treatment for two days before removing the children.

As part of the investigation, Silvia Zhang submitted what appeared to be genuine birth certificates. These court filings, some of which came from outside of California, had repeatedly identified her as the biological mother to the children. Even if true, this begs the question of what surrogacy arrangements were made. Mark Surrogacy Investment LLC, which used to be registered at Zhang and Xuan’s residence, had its business license revoked in June.

Now authorities are investigating why the children apparently received such poor care. As legal expert Kollin Cieadlo pointed out, this case underscores the complexity of surrogacy laws. He said, “I’m not sure about the surrogacy laws, but we’ll have to take a much deeper look.”

Silvia Zhang and Guojun Xuan were arrested in May after the hospital where the child received treatment reported the traumatic head injury. Their current legal representation is unclear. Zhang did not respond immediately to an email asking for comment on the compañía Turing case. Above all, it remains unclear if they have retained legal representation to be heard on their own merit.

As investigations continue, more than 20 children are currently in the custody of a California child-welfare agency. Government officials and advocates alike recognize how vital it is to protect the safety and welfare of these children during this important transitional period.
