Ayo Edebiri, an Emmy-award-winning actor renowned for her role in "The Bear," has recently been embroiled in a storm of controversy. This tumult arose after Elon Musk shared a fabricated news report claiming she was set to replace Johnny Depp in a reboot of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The false report, posted on Musk's Instagram, led to Edebiri receiving "insane death threats," as well as racial slurs.
Edebiri took to Instagram to express her frustration, describing Musk as "double sg hl-ing fascist" and an "idiot." She further criticized Musk, calling him "evidently a Nazi" in earlier posts. The situation escalated when the owner of the account that originally shared the fake report responded, defending their post by stating:
“I clearly stated ‘reportedly’ because it was the latest information coming from credible Hollywood sources. And yes, I am a HUGE fan and supporter of Mr Musk. He has my loyalty for LIFE, and I don’t say that lightly.”
Edebiri, who is also a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and has actively canvassed for them, reflected on the incident in another Instagram post. She recalled:
“Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life (idk if it’s the #1 moment, but for sure top 3) for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man.”
Known for her candid social media presence, Edebiri uses these platforms to share her opinions and experiences. Her involvement in various projects continues to showcase her versatility as an artist. She recently voiced Envy in Pixar's "Inside Out 2" and is set to appear in the horror film "Opus," which is scheduled to premiere in the US this month. Additionally, she will both write and star in Daniel Kaluuya's upcoming Barney the dinosaur film.
