A 55-year-old man, Michael Lewis, has been arrested and charged with stalking and sending threatening messages to Caitlin Clark, a prominent basketball star. Clark, a 22-year-old athlete playing for the Indiana Fever, rose to fame as the No. 1 overall pick in last year's WNBA draft following an exceptional college career at Iowa. Despite prior warnings from law enforcement, Lewis persisted in sending messages, leading to his arrest in Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis police initially contacted Lewis last week after he allegedly sent menacing messages to Clark on the social media platform X. In one alarming message, Lewis stated, "Been driving around your house 3x a day," causing Clark to fear for her safety. In response to the threats, Clark altered her appearance when in public to protect herself.
Lewis was apprehended at a hotel in Indianapolis, where Clark plays professionally for the Indiana Fever. During questioning, Lewis claimed he was on vacation and in an "imaginary relationship" with Clark. Authorities charged him with felony stalking, and he is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. If convicted, Lewis could face up to six years in prison.
Caitlin Clark continues her ascent as one of the most celebrated sports figures in the United States. Her impressive rookie season saw her named rookie of the year and setting a league record in assists. Additionally, she secured a lucrative $28 million sponsorship agreement with Nike. Her exceptional skills and rivalry with Angel Reese have further cemented her status as a leading figure in women's basketball.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears acknowledged the bravery required for women to report such incidents, emphasizing that many do not come forward due to fear. He praised Clark for setting an example for women everywhere, asserting their right to live and work without the threat of sexual violence.
