This is a significant jump and reflects a disturbing trend of increasing unemployment across all demographic groups. The surge in unemployment for Black women far outstrips that of other populations. Economists point to several causes including a deceleration in hiring and a spike in layoffs as reasons behind the unprecedented climb in unemployment rates. Yet the overall labor market is certainly weakening. This has compounded the challenges that Black women face as they are overrepresented in sectors that are more susceptible to economic downturns. Simultaneously, job opportunities have gotten rarer, with this group experiencing a greater increase in unemployment rates than their white counterparts.

Together, these developments constitute a remarkable realignment of politics and power in the pro- and anti-labor camps.
