Bollywood Icon Dharmendra Passes Away at 89

Bollywood’s “He-Man,” Dharmendra, has died at the age of 89. His more than 60-year legacy is eternal in Indian cinema. Saab’s original name was Dharam Singh Deol, born in a small village in rural Punjab. He overcame humble origins to rise to the status of the most acclaimed and recognizable movie star in the world. With that chiseled jaw, sultry eyes and dynamo physique, he quickly commanded attention and uncontested box-office numbers from critics and audiences alike.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dharmendra proved his mettle across genres – be it action, comedy or emotional dramas. Then in the 1960s, he shot up to stardom with his debut blockbuster, *Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere*. This film catapulted him directly to superstardom. He starred as half of a duo of charming bumbling crooks in the landmark 1975 Bollywood film Sholay. This performance opposite Amitabh Bachchan would go on to shape his streak of defining roles in his long career.

Dharmendra was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012 for his immense contributions to Indian cinema. This central government’s award is considered India’s third-highest civilian honor. Throughout his career, he appeared to great acclaim in over 300 films, showcasing his unparalleled range and steadfast dedication to the craft.

Dharmendra’s path to the silver screen started when he won a film talent competition in 1960. Although his life had become marred by his rising public stature, he was still the child of one room rustic schoolhouse where his father was a schoolteacher. For this simple upbringing filled him with a humility and commitment that marked his life.

Dharmendra’s lights didn’t dim only on the film screen — his career extended into politics. From 2004 to 2009 he was a Member of Parliament for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. His dedication to public service was an extension of his belief in making sure he was returning the favor of the community that supported him.

Family was instrumental in Dharmendra’s life. He had four children with his first wife, Prakash Kaur, two of whom went on to successful careers in Bollywood. In 1980, he married fellow actor Hema Malini. They have two daughters, the younger of whom came down with the heritable film industry bug, going into movies herself.

His passing has left a huge hole in the hearts of both fans and colleagues. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi captured the mood when he said,

“He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people.”
