Breaking Bad Iconic House Hits Market Amid Tourist Frenzy

The family home featured in the acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad is officially on the market for $4 million. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the house served as the exterior and backyard setting for Walter White's residence throughout the show's five seasons, which aired from 2008 to 2013. Formerly owned by Joanne Quintana’s family since 1973, the house gained notoriety among fans, attracting an overwhelming number of visitors who have impacted the family's quality of life.

The Breaking Bad crew first scouted the house in 2006, and since then, it has become a significant attraction for fans of the show. The property, with its four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a backyard pool that appeared in pivotal scenes, has become a pilgrimage site. On average, 300 cars visit the location daily. Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad's creator, urged fans to respect the Quintana family’s privacy back in 2015.

“There is nothing original or funny or cool about throwing a pizza on this lady’s roof,” – Vince Gilligan

However, despite the plea, some fans have continued to leave pizzas and even a package addressed to Walter White at the house. This persistent intrusion prompted the family to take security measures.

“That’s it, we’re done, fence is going up,” – Quintana's brother

Increased tourist activity has pressured the family to consider alternatives. They eventually decided to erect a fence around the property to deter visitors. Despite these efforts, the influx of fans persisted, pushing the family to finally list the home for sale.

“We’ve had pizzas on our roof. We’ve had pizzas on our driveway; pizzas until we’re sick of looking at pizzas,” – Fran Padilla

The house's listing price of $4 million starkly contrasts with the median price of $421,000 for homes in the same postcode. This premium reflects its cultural significance and unique history. Despite the challenges faced by her family, Joanne Quintana hopes that future owners will embrace the house’s legacy.

“I hope they make it what the fans want,” – Quintana

There are plenty of ideas circulating among fans about what should come next for this iconic property.

“They want a B&B. They want a museum. They want access to it. Go for it!” – Quintana
