Bryan Braman, Super Bowl Champion and NFL Player, Passes Away at 38

Bryan Braman, former NFL defensive end, lost his courageous fight with cancer at the age of 38. He was best known for his critical role in the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. Sadly, this is the case for fans and colleagues of Matt, as his agent confirmed the news on Thursday evening.

As a player Braman initially launched his pro career as an undrafted free agent signed by the Houston Texans in 2011. In his seven seasons in the NFL, he cemented his legacy as one of the best special teams players in the game. He earned special notoriety for his extraordinary talent at blocking punts. He really strutted his stuff for most of the Eagles’ 2017 Super Bowl run. In a narrow 15-10 win against the Atlanta Falcons in the divisional round, he made a key punt block.

During the Eagles’ run to their first Super Bowl championship in the 2017 season, Braman once again was an invaluable asset. He tallied at least one tackle in that championship game, as the Eagles went on to defeat the New England Patriots 41-33 for the Super Bowl title. As it would turn out, this match would be Braman’s final professional appearance.

Braman’s path to the NFL began with playing one season at Long Beach City College. From there, he took his education and football career to Idaho and West Texas A&M. His resolve and ability landed him on an NFL roster. As true as that may be, it’s almost misleading when compared with the rich contributions he made on and off the field.

In February of this year, Braman was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that would shortly claim his life. He is survived by his two daughters, Blakely and Marlowe. As 11 and 8 year-olds, they filled him with pride and happiness.

“The three greatest accomplishments in my life” – Bryan Braman

His life and legacy extends far past the gridiron. Along with his remarkable athletic accomplishments, people’ll cherish him for his unmatched devotion to his family. Friends, fans, and family members—including many who interacted with his creations in the game—have taken to social media to remember the legacy Braman left behind.
