Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD has had its sales explode over the UK. In fact, they claimed a shocking 880% increase just for the month of September over last year! This surge has positioned the UK as BYD’s largest market outside of China, showcasing the brand’s growing influence in the global automotive landscape.
In September, BYD set newistic sales records in the UK, selling 11,271 vehicles. Nearly all of these sales were due to the popularity of the plug-in hybrid version of the sporty BYD Seal U sports utility vehicle (SUV). That’s why the Jaecoo 7 and BYD Seal U proudly occupied two of the top ten best selling models nationwide. This milestone is yet another impressive milestone solidifying BYD’s position in the highly competitive U.S. market.
The attractiveness of the UK market for BYD is further increased by the lack of tariffs on Chinese EVs. This advantage allows consumers to access a broader range of affordable electric options without the added costs imposed by other regions. Unlike the United States, where high tariffs have largely restricted Chinese car manufacturers like BYD, or the European Union’s recent announcement of levies up to 45% on Chinese EV imports aimed at protecting local car makers, the UK remains a welcoming environment for BYD’s expansion.
Bono Ge, BYD’s UK manager, expressed enthusiasm about the company’s future in Britain, describing it as “hugely exciting.” He shared his intentions to introduce several more new hybrids and electric vehicles, each in the months ahead. This strategic shift will enlarge BYD’s product range and capture more environment-friendly consumers.
BYD’s recent success comes as UK EV sales are at an overall record high. According to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), sales of pure battery electric vehicles jumped up to almost 73,000 units last month. This historic increase illustrates the overwhelming demand and appetite for alternatives to dirty, polluting transportation in the UK market.
To service its growing footprint, BYD recently opened its 100th retail outlet in the UK. This milestone is yet another example of the brand’s commitment to continued growth. Feature image courtesy of MTC. It showcases the strategy to enhance customer accessibility and experience across the region.
