Capturing Culture: Sayan Bose’s Inspiring Journey Through West Bengal

Sayan Bose, a documentary photographer from Kolkata, India, embarked on a captivating journey to Sangrampur, West Bengal, to capture the essence of local life through his lens. Traveling two hours from his home, Bose dedicated a day to document the lifestyles, daily lives, jobs, and struggles of the villagers. His exploration led him to an enchanting sunflower garden, where he created a striking photograph featuring the traditional Chhau mask, a symbol of Bengal's rich cultural heritage.

Bose collaborated with Ariful Alam to create a powerful image that encapsulates tradition and emotion. The Chhau mask, depicting Mahisha, a demon from the Hindu mythology Mahishasura Mardini, played a central role. Alam suggested Bose lift his arms to express the moment's emotion while Bose described his vision for the photograph to him. This creative synergy resulted in a striking composition taken under the warm March sunshine.

“I was roaming around the village, capturing the local people’s lifestyle, asking about their daily lives and jobs and struggles,” said Sayan Bose.

The Chhau mask is not only significant in cultural narratives but also features prominently in Purulia Chhau, a traditional folk dance of Bengal that narrates mythologies and folklores. These masks are cherished as decorative pieces as well. Bose's use of the mask in his photography reflects both the aesthetic beauty and cultural depth inherent in Bengal’s traditions.

“They hold a significant place in Bengal’s rich cultural heritage,” Bose remarked about the Chhau masks.

Bose's photograph stands out due to its unique blend of nature and tradition. The vibrant sunflower garden serves as a picturesque backdrop, enhancing the contrast between nature’s splendor and the cultural narrative embodied in the Chhau mask. This fusion creates a visually arresting portrayal of Bengal's cultural richness.

“It created a striking contrast; the combination of nature, tradition and culture,” Bose expressed.
