Cecilia Giménez, iconic artist behind ‘Monkey Christ’ restoration, passes away at 94

Cecilia Giménez, the amateur artist who became an international sensation after her largely botched restoration of the 19th-century Spanish mural “Ecce Homo” shot around the globe, has died. She passed away at the age of 94. In 2012, her botched attempt to restore the religious oil painting in Borja, northeast Spain, made her a household name around the world. This unfortunate mistake inadvertently made celebrities out of the little town.

Giménez’s goal was to restore the mural “Ecce Homo,” which had been created in 1930 by Elías García Martínez. This spacious piece is found in the Santuario de Misericordia church. The outcome of her restoration ended up being the most mocked restoration of all time, turning it into the poster child for artistic butchery. Despite that backlash, her restoration quickly got people’s attention, becoming an international viral sensation.

As the news became widespread, Borja was flooded with visitors eager to witness the phenomenon created by Giménez’s hands and spirit. The local church capitalized on the moment and began charging admission to view the now famous mural. This decision changed it into an important tourist and cultural point of interest. Ryanair even announced extra flights to Zaragoza, the nearest airport. This special service is specifically for those who can’t wait to see the “Monkey Christ” restoration.

Giménez’s life was marked by personal challenges. Through it all, she courageously accepted the trials of widowhood while raising two disabled children. Tragically, she lost one child due to muscular dystrophy. In spite of these challenges, she was beloved for her defiance and bounty.

In 2023, an opera called Behold the Man, based on her story, debuted. Sadly, Giménez was too sick to join us, but her niece stood in for this wonderful leader at our event. The local community celebrated her legacy, with Eduardo Arilla, the mayor of Borja, recalling the adversity in her life.

“The greatest homage that could be paid to anyone was what they had done with their life.” – Eduardo Arilla

The local church paid tribute to Giménez, emphasizing her character:

“Cecilia was a devoted mother and a fighter, a strong woman, but above all we should talk about her generosity which has won her the whole world’s affection.” – The local church
