Dubbed “Operation Aurora,” this plan targets alleged gang members, yet has led to the arrest of 30 individuals, with only one confirmed gang member in custody.
The situation escalated with heavily armed SWAT teams storming apartment complexes in the early morning hours, primarily around Denver and Aurora. These actions have intensified the already charged atmosphere in a state known for its welcoming stance towards immigrants crossing the US-Mexico border. The largest gathering occurred last Monday, drawing over 1,500 people to discuss the implications of these developments and offer support to those affected.
Colorado's legal infrastructure struggles to keep pace with the demand for representation among undocumented immigrants. The state's low rate of legal representation is indicative of the high volume of individuals requiring assistance. Non-profit organizations like the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (Rmian), which provides free legal services, face significant challenges after President Trump signed an executive order cutting their funding on his first day in office.
The political landscape in Colorado has become increasingly polarized. Representative Lauren Boebert, along with two other state representatives, is pressuring Democratic Governor Jared Polis to repeal laws protecting immigrants' rights. Despite this pressure, Governor Polis has endorsed the core elements of Trump's deportation plan.
