Community in Mourning After Tragic Fire Claims Lives in Crans-Montana

A devastating fire at the popular bar Le Constellation in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has left the community reeling after claiming the lives of at least 40 people on January 1, 2026. Over New Year’s celebrations, tragedy struck, as hundreds of young people poured into the city center to ring in 2023. They made the journey from neighboring countries such as France and Italy to participate in the celebrations.

Among the deceased were four Swiss nationals: a 21-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man, and two minors aged 16. The fire killed the life of Emanuele Galeppini, a 17-year-old Italian golfer. The attack occurred on what should have been a happy, celebratory night. This is what made the loss all the more heartbreaking for this close-knit community of some 6,000 year-round residents.

Authorities suspect the flames originated in the bar’s basement. They believe it was probably started by decorative sparkler candles positioned too near the ceiling. That terrible mistake has now led to a criminal investigation. Authorities are currently investigating Jacques and Jessica Moretti, the owners and operators of Le Constellation. Criminal investigation into the disaster Prosecutors are reportedly weighing homicide, bodily harm and arson by negligence charges in their investigation.

Le Constellation was alive with a fantastic creative spirit. It attracted a youth crowd, boasting free admission and cheap beer and cocktails. As news of the fire spread, local residents rushed to donate blood for those injured in the blaze, with appointments fully booked until the end of January.
