Controversy Erupts Over Nick Adams’ Nomination as US Ambassador to Malaysia

Nick Adams, an “alpha male” and “incredible patriot,” is the latest GOP firestarter. That’s noteworthy given that last year, former President Donald Trump nominated him to be the US ambassador to Malaysia. Adams, a 40-year-old Australian-born American citizen, gained his US citizenship last year. He is now experiencing fierce opposition from Malaysian political leaders as well as the people of Malaysia.

The nomination also comes at a moment of perking sensitivity to US-Malaysia relations. Adams has made headlines for provocative statements on social media, including a post from 2024 where he declared, “If you don’t stand with Israel, you stand with terrorists!” This comment has understandably sent shockwaves across Malaysians. The country is known for its support of Palestine and does not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel.

Her critics from within Malaysia have been vocal with their opposition to Adams’ appointment. Former Minister of Law Zaid Ibrahim condemned the nomination, describing it as “an affront to the country.” He indeed called on the Malaysian government to take a stand and actively oppose the appointment. He emphasized that Malaysia should not be seen as “a dumping ground for ideological firebrands and partisan influencers.”

Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin expressed similar views, urging the government to dismiss Adams’ nomination. New Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke wants to see Adams’ appointment reversed. He is secretary-general of the DAP, according to local media.

Political analyst Dr. Bridget Welsh told The Optics that the nomination of Adams to this role has serious implications for US-Malaysia relations. This, she said, goes to the very heart of the misconception about Malaysia’s role and importance to the United States.

“There is no real recognition and deep appreciation about how critical a role Malaysia plays in the US economy, and the critical importance of these ties for issues of security,” – Dr. Bridget Welsh

Dr Welsh continued to caution that Adams’ appointment would be a considerable risk of driving Southeast Asian nations “straight into the arms of China.” She mentioned that anti-American sentiment is very strong in Malaysia, especially on issues re Gaza and Iran.

“Will [Adams] be diplomatic? His Twitter [X] account raises questions,” – Dr. Bridget Welsh

The pushback against Adams doesn’t stop with elected officials—as many as 4,000 citizens have flooded social media with their response. Local activist Sukri Omar remarked that the Malaysian government must “send a clear message that Malaysia will not be a stage for normalizing Zionist tyranny.”

Nick Adams. confirmation from the full US Senate. Only then will he be able to act like ambassador. His nomination has sparked debates on diplomacy and international relations, reflecting broader concerns about how the US engages with Southeast Asia.
