Controversy Surrounds Border Patrol Commander as Minneapolis Protests Intensify

Gregory Bovino, the former Border Patrol commander, who is at the center of intense controversy in Minneapolis. This chaos comes on the heels of protest over the police shooting of Alex Pretti. Forthcoming regulations and deadlines are creating a perfect storm of tension in Minnesota. Bovino, a top player in the Trump administration’s immigration policy crackdown, is slated to depart from the city. His racist comments about Pretti have attracted national outrage and sparked protests, which resulted in over 30 arrests.

Bovino’s comments about Pretti, whom he labeled a “domestic terrorist who tried to assassinate law enforcement,” have been met with backlash from various quarters, including civil liberties activists and local Democrats. His incendiary comments stoked the anger of a local population already toeing the line between skepticism and outrage at the Trump administration’s immigration-driven agenda.

Just last week, police arrested about 26 people during a protest inside a Minneapolis hotel. This luxury hotel is where Bovino allegedly has been holed up. Local activists urge his ouster and call for a complete overhaul of the city. They point to his unapologetic stance in and aggressive promotion of Trump’s deportation policies as their top reason for displeasure.

Together with a brusque leadership style and inflammatory comments, these actions have made Bovino a lightning rod for controversy. At the same time, most residents will tell you that he played a huge part in inflaming tensions in an already divided community. Local activist John Abernathy offered his reflection, “I think it’s different, it’s unprecedented in all the times I’ve been here. This aggressiveness is new—it’s aimed at people who are just trying to peacefully express their right.”

Bovino is the public face of the Trump administration’s “creative destruction” in Minnesota. He’s been doing the hard work of actually implementing things like raising the use of body-worn cameras among his unit. Still, these efforts haven’t precluded the ire of critics opposed to his approach. Indeed, frustrations about the administration’s larger immigration policies only seem to increase by the day.

Bovino’s incendiary remarks landed like a ton of bricks, triggering an outcry that led to demonstrations. In his place will be Trump’s “border tsar,” Tom Homan. The White House is changing its approach. Their goal is to strike a better balance between the realities on the ground and how enforcement plays out.

Karoline Leavitt, then a spokesperson for the Trump administration, rushed to defend Bovino. She called him “an indispensable member of the president’s brain trust and a wonderful American.” This defense has proven inadequate to answer the type of incitement he is receiving criticism for. Civil rights groups in Minneapolis believe that his presence will only exacerbate the already heightened tensions.

Along with protests against Bovino, Melania Trump recently raised the alarm over the spread of this anti-Bovino unrest. She stated, “We need to unify. I’m calling for unity,” while urging demonstrators to protest peacefully. Her comments speak to a greater yearning for healing and restoration at a moment where it seems like our divisions have never been deeper.

In practice, the situation on the ground is still tense and dangerous. Lance Lillibridge, a local resident affected by the ongoing situation, expressed frustration over the economic climate exacerbated by the unrest: “I’ve never been so cash poor in my entire life.”
