As Easter 2025 draws closer, UK shoppers are facing extremely high prices for Easter eggs. This increase in expenses is due to skyrocketing cocoa prices and an assortment of climate-related factors. The cost of the Cadbury Creme Egg 5 Pack Mixed Chocolate Box 200g has increased from £2.62 in 2022 to £4 in 2023. This significant jump underscores just how expensive these goodies have become. Other chocolate items, including hot chocolate mix, have seen price increases of more than 50% per 100g versus last year.
West Africa, another largely important cocoa-producing region, has already suffered greatly from the effects of climate change since 2023. These high costs drove cocoa prices up an incredible 400% last year. Consequently, manufacturers such as Nestlé have announced multi-million dollar spikes in their production expenditures. The company stated that it has “sometimes been necessary to make adjustments to the price or weight of some of its products.”
The Twix white chocolate Easter egg is a prime example of this trend. As an indication, its price has risen from £5 to £6 in the past 12 months. The egg’s effective unit price has increased 47% as its weight has dropped from 316g to 258g. Even other chocolate categories are riding this specialty wave. At Lidl, in 2024, an 80g pouch of Terry’s Chocolate Orange mini eggs was 99p, then in 2025 it reduced to 70g, resulting in a price increase of 56% per 100g.
Alluding to the relentless impacts of climate change, Amber Sawyer, an analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit said, “She underlined the role that plays in accelerating food inflation. For many commodities rising food inflation bears the fingerprints of climate change,” she explained, pointing to the challenges faced by both producers and consumers.
Despite these increases in chocolate prices, there was some relief for shoppers as prices for milk, cheese, and eggs have dropped. Chocolate prices have already jumped by a whopping 16.5%. That surge is reflective of a larger trend, increasing general food prices by 3.3%, according to official figures released Wednesday morning. Further, these figures indicated that inflation in general was retreating, with headline inflation falling to 2.8% in February.
Nestlé’s KitKat Chunky milk chocolate Easter egg held their prices steady YoY at £1.50 in Morrisons. The egg weight shrank by 129g to 110g, so the egg actually became 17% more expensive for 100g.
