For one, he openly challenged why she herself was not directly elected by European voters. This interrogation came at a time as the EU increased pressure on member states to counter disinformation.
The same day, a heavily coordinated attack hit Kyiv, Ukraine, hitting “almost every district” of the Ukrainian capital. As of November 3, Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said these attacks mainly targeted civilian neighborhoods and energy infrastructure. Never one to back down, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the increased aggression with the same urgency. Today, he called on the global community to impose sanctions on Russia.
As tensions escalate, Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday to discuss further actions against Russian aggression. This visit comes as the EU is under growing pressure to step up its support for Ukraine.
Musk’s comments on EU governance garnered praise from Viktor Orbán’s chief of staff. Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, has been vocal about his opposition to certain EU measures, stating, “We do not accept this obviously unlawful solution contrary to European values.” He backed this up by announcing Hungary’s plans to take these matters to the European Court of Justice.
The backdrop of Musk’s remarks is a troubling night in Kyiv, where Yulia Svyrydenko, Ukraine’s first deputy prime minister, expressed deep concern for families affected by the latest attacks. She remarked, “These are families who went to sleep expecting a normal night, and instead faced terror from the sky.” Svyrydenko emphasized the urgency of air defense needs in light of the ongoing assaults, stating, “Every such attack underscores a clear and urgent truth: Ukraine needs air defenses and decisive steps to increase pressure on the aggressor.”
In addition to the air defense concerns, Zelenskyy highlighted the strategic necessity of moving forward with decisions regarding frozen Russian assets. He stated, “The long-awaited decision on frozen Russian assets must move forward without delay. This is a strategic necessity.” Moreover, Zelenskyy’s administration is already working day and night alongside international partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense systems. He conceded that the country is still short on reinforcements. “A great deal of work is under way with partners to strengthen our air defense, but it is not enough,” he noted. “We need reinforcement with additional systems and interceptor missiles.”
As long as the conflict continues, Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk has had its oil exports halted after a blow by Ukrainian forces with a drone attack. This suspension is proof that a major economic shift is taking place because of the war. It highlights the broader impacts on Ukraine’s ongoing fight to defend its territorial integrity.
While Musk’s comments focused on EU governance, they reflected a growing frustration among some leaders regarding the pace and efficacy of European responses to Russian aggression. In Hungary, Orbán’s chief of staff celebrated Musk’s comments on X. This does imply more than a few EU leaders would be sympathetic to Musk’s interpretation of democratic representation in such a union.
Their resistance enables Zelenskyy’s administration to keep demanding more and more military support from Western allies. He pointed out that “Ukrainian missiles are delivering increasingly significant and precise results virtually every month,” demonstrating Ukraine’s evolving military capabilities.
