Stephane Sejourne, the European Commission’s executive vice president for prosperity and industrial strategy, stressed the importance of Japan and the European Union working together. Working together, they’ll be able to take advantage of development opportunities for rare-earth minerals and other valuable resources abundant in Greenland. In this unique interview on September 16, 2025, Nikkei’s Takashi Tsuji spoke with Sejourne in Tokyo. Sejourne explained his vision for a collaborative approach that would economically and strategically advantage both areas.
In his Dialogue, as published Online by Nikkei and featured this week in their “editor’s picks” section, Sejourne underscored the deep need for a united Europe and Japan. He urged the two regions to pool their resources and expertise to better realize Greenland’s abundant rare-earth mineral deposits. Advanced materials made from these critical minerals are the backbone of many high-tech industries, especially electronics and renewable energy technologies. At the helm of this strategic partnership is the intention to go beyond the development of resources to ensure the security and sustainability of our supply chains.
Sejourne’s comments come right as the European bloc prepares to unleash an ambitious deregulation agenda. This federal initiative seeks to increase investment and encourage alignment in critical strategic sectors. Japan and the EU should join forces to consolidate their positions in the dynamic global market for rare-earth elements. These three elements are key to moving forward with green technologies.
One highlight of the interview was a stunning portrait of Sejourne, captured by Seiko Ota. This depiction served to beautifully underscore his absence during that critical debate. Selecting Tokyo as the host city underscores Japan’s key position in the global supply chain. It underlines the country’s strategic role when it comes to technology and industry.
Sejourne’s appeal for collaborative development projects is an indication of the increasing awareness of the geopolitical value of rare-earth minerals. Both regions have been challenged to maintain a reliable supply of these vital commodities. Increasing competition from other global players only deepens their despair.
