FBI Records on Martin Luther King Jr Released Amid Family’s Concerns

The recent disclosure of FBI files concerning Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination has sparked new debate. At the same time, this has generated deep outrage, primarily from his own family. King’s role as leader of the American civil rights movement. Tragically, MLK was cut down by an assassin’s bullet on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 39. Nearly 200,000 pages of these documents have only recently been made public. This all comes on the heels of an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump, which sought declassification of records related to important historical figures, including King.

James Earl Ray’s guilty plea for King’s murder. He subsequently recanted his confession and maintained his innocence until he passed away in 1998. Ray’s assertions that he had been set up have gained some small measure of credence from the children of King, Bernice and Martin Luther King III. They contend that the circumstances surrounding their father’s assassination warrant additional inquiry. Coretta Scott King had long called for an inquiry to be reopened into her husband’s assassination.

The FBI’s surveillance of King while he was alive was not only hypocritical, it was extensive and deeply problematic. It involved a disinformation campaign orchestrated by J. Edgar Hoover, aimed at undermining King’s credibility and the larger civil rights movement. Only in 1977 did the FBI finally cease actively compiling records on King. They then transferred those records to National Archives and Records Administration. These direct primary source documents were kept hidden under court order until just recently.

As with the public release of all these records, King’s family was given notice in advance. Their response is an indicator of just how worried they are about this information seeing the light of day. In a joint statement, they noted that historical context is critical when examining what’s inside the files.

“The release of these files must be viewed within their full historical context.” – Martin III and Bernice King

The King Center raised concerns about the timing and violent nature of the impending release. They recognized that it takes place against a backdrop of many urgent challenges facing the United States and global society.

“It is unfortunate and ill-timed, given the myriad of pressing issues and injustices affecting the United States and the global society.” – The King Center

The family’s interests and worries go beyond just how these records will be used or understood. They fear that this misrepresentation could personally and unjustly attack the legacy of their father. This, in turn, would threaten the whole civil rights movement.

“While we support transparency and historical accountability, we object to any attacks on our father’s legacy or attempts to weaponize it to spread falsehoods.” – Martin III and Bernice King

Reverend Al Sharpton argued that the release was more politically motivated than a true act of transparency. He argued that it acts as a smokescreen from a host of other Trump-related controversies.

“Trump releasing the MLK assassination files is not about transparency or justice.” – Rev Al Sharpton

Sharpton made it clear that this action appears to be a sham. It seeks to redirect boisterous public anger at the key problems that Trump is facing right now.

“It’s a desperate attempt to distract people from the firestorm engulfing Trump over the Epstein files and the public unraveling of his credibility among the Maga base.” – Rev Al Sharpton

Their release, while long overdue, raises critical questions about accountability. It further illuminates current narratives surrounding race and justice in America. The historical significance of King’s life and work continues to challenge us to go beyond the superficial glorification to the sensationalism.

Martin III and Bernice King reiterated that those who promote the FBI’s surveillance materials may inadvertently align themselves with efforts to undermine their father’s legacy.

“Those who promote the fruit of the FBI’s surveillance will unknowingly align themselves with an ongoing campaign to degrade our father and the Civil Rights Movement.” – Martin III and Bernice King
