FDD Seminar Explores Taiwan’s Security Through Tabletop Exercise

On November 17, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) held a workshop in Washington, D.C. The discussion focused on Taiwan’s security landscape as China’s aggressive military behavior escalates across the region. The event featured an amazing lineup of powerful speakers. Among them were retired Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery, J.P. Morgan’s Kenan Arkan and Craig Singleton of FDD. Politico’s Phelim Kine added additional context throughout the discussions.

Throughout the seminar, participants engaged in lively discussions around a variety of approaches. Specifically, they zeroed in on the ways that China might unify Taiwan with the mainland by force. This post is the result of a tabletop exercise. FDD carried it out this past summer in partnership with a Taiwanese university. Though the exercise did simulate possible Chinese tactics, it required that no kinetic force be used in the scenarios put forth.

The involvement of distinguished speakers highlighted the importance of the topics discussed, as they brought various perspectives to the table. In this strategic context, Rear Admiral Montgomery discussed what is at stake for Taiwan, and how international allies can aid in Taiwan’s defense. Kenan Arkan offered a financial angle, laying out how economic fortunes might shape Taiwan’s security calculus in the years ahead.

Craig Singleton, also of FDD, presented the key takeaways from the tabletop exercise. He pointed to the preparations that need to be made right now to deter possible Chinese aggression. Phelim Kine from Politico rounded out the panel by discussing media coverage and public perception regarding the situation in Taiwan.

The FDD’s seminar served as a crucial platform for experts to exchange ideas and strategize on Taiwan’s future security options. The organization aims to foster a deeper understanding of the geopolitical challenges facing Taiwan and to encourage proactive measures to bolster its defenses.
