Jake Lang, a figure embroiled in the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, has announced his candidacy for the United States Senate in Florida. Lang, who was accused of wielding a baseball bat and shield against police during the tumultuous events, has yet to stand trial for his involvement. His legal proceedings have seen continual delays until he was ultimately pardoned alongside roughly 1,600 others when Donald Trump assumed office.
Lang's decision to launch his Senate bid in Florida rather than his native New York stems from a sense of greater acceptance in the Sunshine State. He expressed to the Miami New Times his strategic choice of Florida, indicating a warmer reception compared to New York. Despite his controversial past, Lang has not expressed remorse for his actions on January 6, 2021. Instead, he often characterizes himself as a "political prisoner."
In February, Lang formalized his political ambitions by filing a statement of candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission. His campaign aligns with what he describes as a "100% TRUMP AMERICA AGENDA," advocating for policies such as mass deportation, sealing the border, significant tax cuts, and efforts to prevent a third world war. Lang's campaign message is clear: "January 6 was a cry for change, and I am that change."
Lang has been an outspoken member of the so-called J6 community, frequently addressing his Capitol-related charges both during his incarceration and after receiving a pardon. He has become a vocal presence in media outlets, discussing his beliefs and motivations surrounding the events of January 6. Additionally, Lang has been active in organizing online fundraisers, amassing substantial support for others facing charges related to the Capitol attack.
Previously, Lang contemplated a run for the US House of Representatives in a New York district, but the decision remained uncertain. He remarked to the Miami New Times that it was more of a "maybe thing." Notably, he is also considering vying for the US House seat left vacant by Matt Gaetz.
Supporters within the J6 community endorse Lang, viewing him as a patriotic hero akin to a founding father-style leader. His campaign rhetoric is bold and provocative.
“The tree of liberty is thirsty, America. We may have won the 2024 election, but the revolution has just begun. We’re going back to the Capitol, and this time as your next elected officials and lawmakers.” – Jake Lang
Lang's campaign website reflects his priorities and vision for America. It underscores his belief that January 6 was not merely an isolated event but a pivotal moment calling for change. He aims to channel that momentum into his political endeavors.
