Robert Morris, a former member of Donald Trump's spiritual advisory committee, has been indicted on five criminal counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. The alleged incidents date back to the 1980s in Oklahoma, where Morris is accused of sexual misconduct involving a 12-year-old girl. The indictment, issued by a multi-county grand jury on March 12, alleges that Morris's inappropriate actions began in December 1982 and continued over a span of four years.
Morris, who was a senior pastor of Gateway Church, one of the largest megachurches in the United States, had resigned from his position last year. In December 1982, Morris was reportedly a traveling evangelist visiting Hominy, Oklahoma, with the family of the alleged victim, Cindy Clemishire. At the time, Morris was 21 years old.
Cindy Clemishire has come forward, stating that Robert Morris sexually assaulted her during this period.
“After almost 43 years, the law has finally caught up with Robert Morris for the horrific crimes he committed against me as a child,” Clemishire expressed.
In addition to these allegations, a leaked phone transcript from 2005 revealed that Morris attempted to bribe Clemishire, suggesting she "put a price on it," further complicating his legal challenges.
The Gateway Church has also been affected by these revelations. Following an internal investigation, four elders were removed after it was found that they either knew of the abuse or failed to act upon it when informed.
Morris's involvement in religious and political circles extended to being a member of Trump's Evangelical Executive Advisory Board. He also played a role in efforts to mobilize conservatives and evangelicals in support of Trump's 2024 presidential campaign.
Gentner Drummond commented on Morris's indictment, stressing the gravity of the charges.
“There can be no tolerance for those who sexually prey on children,” said Drummond.
He further stated the need for accountability and expressed gratitude for the efforts made by authorities.
“Now, it is time for the legal system to hold him accountable. My family and I are deeply grateful to the authorities who have worked tirelessly to make this day possible and remain hopeful that justice will ultimately prevail,” Drummond added.
