Google has announced changes to its “Work from Anywhere” (WFA) policy, which was initially introduced during the Covid pandemic to provide employees with greater flexibility. However, despite the flexibility provided by this policy, staffers were explicitly prohibited from working from home or anywhere close to home. The update comes as tech companies, including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, are increasingly encouraging their employees to return to the office.
The WFA policy permits Google employees to work from a location outside of their main office for up to four weeks each calendar year. This initiative was designed to cater to the needs of employees during the pandemic, according to John Casey, Google’s vice president of performance and rewards. He stated, “WFA was meant to meet Googlers where they were during the pandemic.”
Recently Google has started cracking down on this loophole. Staff are required to work within a certain time zone business hours when teleworking from a different time zone. This change emphasizes that WFA days are distinct from the company’s requirement for corporate staff to be in the office five days a week. Furthermore, Casey clarified the intent behind the WFA policy, saying, “The policy was always intended to be taken in increments of a week and not be used as a substitute for working from home in a regular hybrid work week.”
