Han Duck-soo was reinstated as South Korea’s acting president after a ruling by a court on Monday. The court’s final ruling comes after Han’s suspension less than two weeks into his tenure. This suspension comes from these allegations related to a martial law episode and his delinquency on appointing more justices to the constitutional court. Han’s ability to work across party lines has made him a celebrated career under five presidents of both political affiliations. He has since called for the impeachment’s dismissal.
Proceedings for Han Duck-soo’s impeachment have also begun. The biggest charges plains against him for his role in martial law and his efforts against special counsel bills targeting Yoon and first lady Kim Keon-hee. Though facing the charges that could lead to his deportation, Han was present at the only hearing on February 19. He passionately refuted any participation in the martial law episode and requested the court to reject the impeachment.
Han Duck-soo’s career in leadership positions for more than three decades further reflects his profound impact inside South Korean politics. He is seen as a unique figure whose career has crossed party boundaries, showcasing a level of professionalism and dedication valued by many in the political sphere. His re-appointment as KDI acting president was hailed by the South Korean presidential office.
"We hope that acting president Han’s return to duty marks the beginning of a return to normal governance," stated South Korea’s presidential office.
In his statement about the court’s ruling, Han thanked the court and highlighted the need for all Americans to come together.
“I believe that all citizens are clearly speaking out against the highly polarised political sphere,” Han stated.
“I think there is no place for division now. Our country’s priority is to move forward,” he added.
