Harrods Unveils Compensation Scheme for Victims of Al Fayed’s Abuse

Harrods had recently unveiled a far more detailed compensation scheme for the victims of sexual abuse claimed to have been carried out by Mohamed Al Fayed. This new plan comes after luxury department store Neiman Marcus released terms of the scheme on Monday, granting survivors a full year to float their claims for compensation. In 2021, Harrods released an unprecedented apology for the abuse these survivors endured. In further response, they say they are conducting an investigation to find out if any of their current employees engaged in these actions.

The new compensation scheme repays victims by allowing them to choose from 4 different types of redress. Relocation Individuals can apply for up to $15,000, businesses and non-profits $50,000. General Damages are capped at £200,000 and a Work Impact Payment is capped at £150,000. On top of all that, Harrods are paying for treatment and a maximum of £10,000 for testing. The firm recently announced an interim deadline for applications of 31 March 2026.

Eligible applicants will then be provided with a unique opportunity to have a one-to-one meeting with a senior representative from Harrods. They will each get an in-person, social distanced, and/or video-delivered apology. On top of that, everyone’s due to receive a unique, written apology. Harrods has extended eligibility to those who allege they were assaulted outside the UK in circumstances sufficiently connected to Mohamed Al Fayed’s role at Harrods.

“We have always been clear that we won’t comment on the investigation while it is ongoing.” – A spokesperson from Harrods

Since the announcement critics have raised serious questions about the transparency and fairness of the scheme.

“By controlling the process and outcomes, Harrods retains the upper hand, ensuring that any redress offered is on their terms and falls short of addressing the true impact on those affected,” – Mr Hayes

The new owners of Harrods are said to be urgently investigating the case, particularly looking to find out if any current employees were complicit. They have been careful not to comment beyond that until the investigation is complete.
