A significant ceasefire and hostage deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas, as reported by NBC News. This development comes after intense negotiations facilitated by Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who met separately with both Hamas and Israeli negotiators. The agreement marks a pivotal moment in the 15-month conflict that has devastated the region, offering a glimmer of hope for peace.
The conflict intensified following the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the taking of 253 hostages. This tragic event underscored the urgent need for a resolution. Over recent months, both sides have worked towards a ceasefire, contingent upon the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. To date, around 116 captives have been liberated.
"The deal looks much better than previously," Saar told the media Monday, Reuters reported.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar expressed gratitude to American officials for their instrumental role in advancing the ceasefire talks. Key figures, including envoys from both President Joe Biden's administration and President-elect Donald Trump's team, participated in the negotiations. Steve Witkoff, Trump's designated envoy for the Middle East, made multiple trips to Qatar and Israel to facilitate discussions.
The deal's framework is based on a proposal from the Biden administration dating back to May. Its success is crucial for ensuring continued support from President-elect Trump once he assumes office. The arrangement involves Hamas's demand for the complete release of hostages in exchange for an Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza and an end to ongoing hostilities. Conversely, Israeli leaders have maintained that their campaign in Gaza must persist until Hamas is dismantled.
The Gaza campaign has resulted in over 46,000 fatalities and extensive destruction of the blockaded territory, according to Palestinian health authorities. Despite these challenges, news of the ceasefire and hostage deal sparked jubilant celebrations in both Israel and Gaza late Wednesday.
