Inside the #AltGov Movement: Federal Employees Unite Against Trump Policies

A network of federal employees and contractors known as #AltGov is actively working to resist the Trump administration's policies. This covert group has emerged on the public platform Bluesky, where they maintain a presence with over 40 accounts and nearly 200,000 followers. The group seeks to counter misinformation, provide support to employees facing layoffs, and engage citizens in action plans to oppose the administration's agenda.

The origins of #AltGov trace back to the first Trump administration, with the "ALT National Park Service" account on Twitter serving as an early example. However, the current iteration of this movement on Bluesky has not yet been widely reported. Despite this lack of media attention, the number of #AltGov accounts has doubled in recent weeks, revealing a growing community of dissent within federal ranks.

Members of #AltGov utilize encrypted messaging apps like Wire to securely exchange information and coordinate their efforts. Within their ranks, they focus on correcting disinformation and disseminating accurate information about the perceived chaos resulting from Trump's policies. The network also aims to provide everyday citizens with "action plans," such as contacting members of Congress and participating in town halls.

The internal challenges faced by federal employees are significant. Thousands have experienced layoffs, adding stress and pressure to their roles. A FEMA employee reported that four employees were fired under the current administration. The #AltGov network has become a lifeline for these individuals, offering mutual support during difficult times.

"We are gonna need food bank info and benefits and anything the [federal] unions don’t cover." – #AltGov member

In an effort to galvanize support and awareness, #AltGov members recently sent an email to 2.3 million federal employees. The email reiterated the oath federal employees take, breaking it down into five key points. However, due to many employees working a four-day, 10-hour schedule, some did not see this email until after the response deadline had passed.

"1. I supported and defended the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." – FEMA employee

"2. I bore true faith and allegiance to the same," – FEMA employee

"When I did it, I teared up." – FEMA employee

The controversy surrounding FEMA's handling of funds allocated by Congress for immigration-related expenses has been another focal point for #AltGov members. While the official narrative suggested mismanagement, #AltGov members accused the administration of distorting facts.

"Fiction: FEMA paid $59 million last week for illegal immigrants to stay in luxury hotel rooms in NYC." – #AltGov FEMA account

"Fact: FEMA administered funds allocated by Congress via the Shelter and Services Program (for Customs and Border Protection) which reimburses jurisdictions for immigration-related expenses. FEMA just sends the payments." – #AltGov FEMA account

The network remains vigilant in its mission to reveal what they perceive as misinformation from federal authorities.

"The official story the federal government was telling was a lie!" – #AltGov member

"Of course they didn’t throw CBP under the bus – because to them, those are the people who lock up immigrants." – #AltGov member

Despite operating under significant pressure, #AltGov members continue to find humor in their situation.

"Bonus points to anyone who responds that they spent their government subsidy on hookers and blow." – Federal employee
