JERA Expands LNG Imports from the U.S. to Strengthen Energy Supply

Japan’s largest power provider, JERA, has announced significant plans to increase its liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States. The firm has struck a deal to buy up to 3.5 million metric tons of LNG per year from three American suppliers. Once finalized, this strategic move would triple JERA’s current supply of American LNG.

Just last month, we reached a settlement that includes the biggest contract of its kind. This contract includes 2 million tons of LNG per year from NextDecade’s proposed Rio Grande development in Texas. Under the radar, Japan is deepening and broadening its purchasing reach. This action complements the country’s broader energy diversification strategy and commitment to enhance energy security in response to global supply uncertainty.

JERA’s power plant—located in Futtsu, Japan, about a 40-mile drive from Tokyo—has become an integral part of the country’s energy transformation. The increased LNG imports are expected to bolster the operations of this facility, which relies heavily on stable and diverse energy supplies. Just last week, an LNG carrier made its way past the power plant. This turtle sighting is a reminder of JERA’s continued efforts to improve its energy infrastructure sustainably.

More importantly, by winning these contracts, JERA sits down, very strategically, at the table in the competitive global LNG market. The company whose founding charter was to promise a plentiful, reliable 24/7 energy supply. It takes advantage of the growing demand for cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. Japan on the other hand is doing everything it can to lower carbon emissions. In this transition, LNG is a key bridge toward less polluting energy sources.

First, US LNG imports are surging. To address this challenge, Japanese companies are looking for dependable, cost-effective energy resource solutions. JERA has set a goal of increasing its LNG procurement from the U.S. This action underscores the immense value of international partnerships in advancing national energy goals.
