Kanye West Opens Up About Autism Diagnosis and Upcoming Album “Bully”

Kanye West has revealed his autism diagnosis and announced the release of his new album, "Bully," set to launch on June 15th, coinciding with his daughter North West's birthday. In recent statements, West shared how this diagnosis has provided clarity on his behavior and creativity. He expressed that the forthcoming album represents a blend of his previous works, likening it to his "Miseducation" and "Gnarls Barkley" albums.

West spoke candidly about his mental health journey, noting that he no longer takes medication after being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder. He believes that autism is not an illness but rather a condition that offers a unique perspective.

“I haven’t taken the medication since I found out that bipolar wasn’t the right diagnosis. It’s finding stuff that doesn’t block the creativity, obviously that’s what I bring to the world. It’s worth the ramp-up, as long as y’all get the creativity.” – Kanye West

West emphasized the creative freedom he experiences with autism, drawing a parallel to the film "Rain Man." This newfound understanding has also influenced his music, especially in his upcoming album.

“Autism takes you to a Rain Man thing,” – Kanye West

Reflecting on his relationship with former manager Don C, West acknowledged the challenges they faced. He noted that Don C's tough love was rooted in genuine care for him.

“It’s been so hard on him because he loves me. It’s so difficult for them, because this is like a grown man – you can’t take control of his bank account, you can’t control what I’m saying on Twitter.” – Kanye West

West also discussed his admiration for Donald Trump, which he openly expressed in 2018 by wearing a Make America Great Again cap. He reiterated his support for Trump, despite public backlash.

“‘I’ma wear this Trump hat because I like Trump in general.’ And then when people tell you to not do it, you just get on that one point. And that’s my problem.” – Kanye West

In terms of musical influences, West credited the White Stripes for inspiring a series of solo tracks. He also highlighted past collaborations, such as with Paul McCartney on "All Day," as pivotal moments in his career.

“I tried two times to do it: the first time was Black Skinhead. The second time was All Day – Paul McCartney wrote that melody [on his Wings song When the Wind Is Blowing].” – Kanye West

West's reconciliation with producer Mike Dean marks another significant development in his personal and professional life. Dean, known for being a key creative foil, plays a crucial role in shaping West's sound.

West spoke about Drake, comparing him to a superhero who occasionally steps away before returning with renewed energy. He praised Drake for advancing the musical frequency, acknowledging their complex relationship.

His wife, Bianca Censori, played an integral role in encouraging him to seek rediagnosis for autism. This support has been instrumental in helping West better understand himself and his behavioral patterns.

“A lot of what was sending me into those episodes … the constant feeling of not being in control spun me out of control,” – Kanye West

West's journey has not been without controversy. His deal with Adidas ended in 2022 following antisemitic remarks. Despite this setback, he remains focused on his creative endeavors and upcoming projects.

“When fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I’ll do it the opposite way,” – Kanye West
