KFC is relocating its U.S. headquarters from Louisville, Kentucky, to Plano, Texas, as part of a strategic reorganization by its parent company, Yum Brands. This move is expected to unfold over the next six months, affecting approximately 100 KFC U.S. employees who will be required to make the transition. The relocation is part of Yum's broader strategy to establish two main corporate hubs in the United States: one in Plano and another in Irvine, California.
The shift also entails bringing back about 90 remote employees to their respective campuses based on their work locations. This decision aligns with Yum Brands' recent directive for its remote workforce to return to office settings. Despite the move, KFC plans to maintain a corporate presence in Louisville and intends to construct a new flagship restaurant in its former hometown.
Plano, Texas, has emerged as a popular choice for corporate relocations, thanks to its business-friendly environment. According to a 2023 report by CBRE, Texas has consistently attracted companies seeking favorable business climates. Yum Brands has already positioned its global teams for KFC and Pizza Hut in Plano, while Taco Bell and The Habit Burger & Grill teams are based in Irvine, California.
The move follows a similar trend set by Yum's competitor, Papa Johns, which moved its headquarters from Louisville to Atlanta in 2020. By consolidating its headquarters in Plano, Yum Brands aims to streamline operations and leverage business opportunities in the region.
While KFC is leaving Kentucky, Yum Brands and the KFC Foundation are committed to maintaining corporate offices in Louisville. This decision reflects their continued investment in the city, despite the headquarters shift.
