Just as we published our report, on September 3, 2023, defense intelligence leaders from North Korea, Russia, and China met in Beijing. They met to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Kim Jong Un, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping attended a military parade that showcased their nations’ military capabilities and reinforced their strategic partnership.
The event was held in the very centre of Beijing, generating a huge amount of interest. It represented the growing trilateral security alliance between the three countries. The one-day military parade featured a gaudy display of over-the-top military hardware and personnel. Beyond marking a hard-won historical victory, it was a powerful show of solidarity and common purpose at a time of unprecedented global crises.
As you may know, the Supreme Leader of North Korea has been making a furious effort to improve military preparations. He’s been busy strengthening diplomatic relations with Russia and China. His attendance at the parade highlighted North Korea’s willingness to work closely with its allies. Putin, the President of Russia, emphasized the importance of military cooperation and mutual support among the three nations during his address at the event.
It was the third annual state visit by China President Xi Jinping to celebrate founding. He touched upon the need for shared regional stability and security. The celebration shone a spotlight on China’s massive and often overlooked contribution to World War II. It laid bare the country’s ongoing power in global politics.
The military parade, filled with tanks and advanced missiles, further highlighted each country’s military strength. Analysts noted that assuming the joint appearance marked a changing of the strategic guard is an understatement. These countries are playing an active role to restore balance to the Western hegemony.
