Listeria Outbreak Linked to Prepared Foods Affects Ten in the US

And now at least TEN Americans have gotten sick because of it. This illness is a result of a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak linked to the consumption of ready-to-eat food products. Signs and symptoms of listeriosis usually appear within 1 to 2 weeks after eating contaminated food. In August, federal officials announced that they were launching an investigation into the outbreak. Even though they had initial difficulty identifying the outbreak cause, recent events have led to a new investigation.

In April, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally reopened its investigation. They found the dangerous pathogen Listeria in samples collected from Fresh & Ready Foods. Our review found that these samples corresponded with the strain that has been causing the current outbreak. In turn, Fresh & Ready Foods has voluntarily recalled 63 products that have potentially been contaminated with listeria.

To identify the recalled products, you can look at their “use by” dates. These dates are all from April 22 to May 19 of this year. These products were marketed all sorts of different ways. Other brands under the umbrella include Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away. Processors distributed the products through multiple retail and wholesale channels. These ranged from hospitals, hotels, and convenience stores in southern Arizona and California to airports and airlines in Nevada and Washington.

This original recall came about in February 2025 after twelve complaints of illness associated with these items.

“We are taking these precautionary measures to ensure public safety and minimize risk,” – Fresh & Ready Foods.

The FDA is continuing to scrutinize the situation with the goal of preventing additional instances of Listeria infection. The agency strongly encourages consumers that purchased these products to take a look at their “use by” dates and check accordingly. Not safe enough to use, beyond what the law allows!
