Luka Doncic’s Trade to Lakers Shakes Up NBA Contract Landscape

In a major NBA shake-up, superstar Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers over the weekend in a deal involving the Utah Jazz. Doncic, 25, who is presently under a five-year, $215 million contract with an average annual salary of $43 million, will have his contract transferred to the Lakers. The trade marks a significant shift in Doncic's career trajectory, as he was on course to sign a five-year, $345 million contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks had he stayed. Instead, he now becomes eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension with the Lakers.

The four-year extension with the Lakers is set to expire at the end of the 2026-2027 season. However, Doncic has the option to opt out of this extension at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season. This maneuver could potentially open doors for a lucrative contract opportunity, allowing Doncic to sign a shorter-term deal in the offseason and later secure a contract totaling nearly $420 million. This prospective deal would commence in his 11th year in the league, with Doncic currently in his seventh.

The trade involving Doncic also saw Anthony Davis moving to the Dallas Mavericks. Davis, a key player for the Lakers, is now locked into a three-year, $186 million extension with his new team. As part of the trade agreement, Davis waived nearly $6 million as a trade kicker. Although Davis could be eligible for a supermax extension, his injury history and age make this scenario less probable.

The trade not only affects Doncic's financial prospects but also impacts team dynamics for both the Lakers and the Mavericks. The Lakers acquire a dynamic talent in Doncic, whose skills and court vision have made him one of the most exciting players in the league. Meanwhile, the Mavericks gain Anthony Davis, whose defensive prowess and experience could significantly enhance their roster.

For Doncic, this move presents both challenges and opportunities. While missing out on the potential $345 million extension with the Mavericks is notable, his path with the Lakers could lead to even greater financial rewards and possibly more championship opportunities. The decision to opt out of or complete his upcoming contract with the Lakers will be critical in shaping his future earnings and legacy.
