Carney, a 60-year-old political neophyte, is readying to call a national election in Canada for April 28. Carney now leads the opposition Liberal Party following the end of Justin Trudeau’s nearly decade-long premiership. He’s entering the political arena prepared to combat big challenges. The one-time two-term central banker is preparing to introduce himself to Democratic voters as the most electable alternative to former US president Donald Trump. Most recently, Trump has placed the possibility of tariffs on Canadian goods, increasing the urgency.
The frozen trade dispute between the United States and Canada is thawing. Among Trump’s high-cost proposed tariffs, of course, is a doozie – 25% on steel and aluminum. This has left Canada’s businesses on the backfoot, as they figure out the long-term impacts of these future economic headwinds.
In response to Trump's threats, Carney has pledged to maintain Canada's reciprocal tariffs. The existing Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) trade deal remains a critical framework for managing North American trade relations, and Carney's stance is seen as a commitment to uphold Canada's interests.
So expect a political firestorm in next years election. Carney will likely be going up against Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre. The Conservatives have only 120 seats in the House of Commons, so it’s really anybody’s game at this point as we head towards a very competitive electoral battle.

Carney’s entry into Canadian politics would be an inflection point for Canadian leadership. His deep experience as a central banker comes in very handy. It allows him to better manage China’s increasingly complicated trade relationship with the United States. Foremost, Carney has no political experience. This adds to the doubt as he continues to rock the political world by trying to establish his credibility in the political arena.
