In short, Boelter’s life is likely about to be capsized. He is directly charged with federal and state murder counts for the deaths of Melissa Hortman, a former Democratic Minnesota state house speaker and her husband Mark. In the early hours of Saturday morning, an entire world was lost. Boelter purportedly accosted the couple in their own residence, brandishing a 9mm pistol while posing as a police officer.
At least one law enforcement report lists Boelter’s vehicle as a black SUV when he drove to the Hortmans’ home. The vehicle was not alone, as the license plate read police. In addition to his black tactical vest, the silicone mask was an amazing addition that made him look extremely intimidating. With a resolute rap, he declared himself come to their doorstep. In this brutal confrontation, Boelter murdered Melissa and Mark Hortman. He critically injured Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.
The gruesome circumstances in which Boelter acted demonstrate a deeply callous and dangerous mentality. Authorities have called him a doomsday “prepper,” saying he had told his family to “gear up for war.” Authorities found that Boelter and his wife had hoarded weapons, delayed terrorists and gasoline in their survivalist lifestyle. His wife, Mary, suggested that he give his “bailout plan” to their kids. To that end, the plan lists steps to be taken during times of “exigent circumstances.”
After the ambush, Boelter exchanged gunfire with police outside the Hortmans’ home at approximately 3:30 am but managed to flee the scene. In fact, he only used his access code for a gym locker a day before carrying out these shootings. After the incident, law enforcement pulled over Boelter’s wife and four young children outside of their home community near Lake Mille Lacs. She explained that he had just sent their kids a mass text telling them to “get ready for battle.”
Investigators further unpacked Boelter’s barnstorming activities. Once inside what law enforcement officials believe was his vehicle, they found a terrifying “hit list” of people to target. This nearly comprehensive list creates a deep suspicion of his motives and his motivations in advance of the tragedy.
“We are grappling with the reality that we live in a world where public service carries such risks as being targeted because someone disagrees with you or doesn’t like what you stand for.” – The Hoffman family
On Monday, Boelter was apprehended after trying to escape arrest by running into a wooded area bordering his property. His arrest two days after the shooting spree, as law enforcement had pursued him actively. FBI agent Terry Getsch pointed out in an affidavit that Boelter had a history of training with partners. These partners were in Red Lion, a security firm based out of the Congo, Africa.
The recent murders have sent their otherwise quiet, small community reeling. In particular, they underscored the risks for public officials and their families. This brazen act of violence highlights the hazards that public servants face on a daily basis. It highlights that people who feel excluded from mainstream society can be pushed to extreme action.
