Chair Keith Self of Texas introduced McBride as "Mr McBride," prompting immediate backlash.
This was not the first instance where McBride faced misgendering on the House floor by Republican members. As tensions rose, senior Democrat Bill Keating intervened, insisting that McBride be introduced correctly.

The hearing, which was supposed to address significant international concerns, took an unexpected turn as the focus shifted to the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals within the government. McBride has previously been targeted by a bill introduced by Nancy Mace of South Carolina, aiming to ban transgender women from using women's bathrooms on Capitol Hill.
Despite this public misstep, McBride revealed that some Republicans have shown warmth and welcome towards her privately, yet remain silent in public forums. She expressed her resolve to strategically choose her battles and not be provoked by such actions.
“Every single time we hear them say the word ‘trans’, look at what they’re doing with their right hand. Look at what they’re doing to pick the pocket of American workers, to fleece seniors by privatizing social security and Medicare. Look at what they’re doing, undermining workers.” – McBride
The incident adds to growing concerns over the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in US politics. McBride emphasized that these attacks serve as distractions from policies detrimental to everyday Americans.
Following Keating’s challenge, Self reiterated his stance by stating:
