NeuroSafe™ is an innovative surgical technique that provides new hope to men undergoing prostate cancer surgery. Its goal is to spare important nerves associated with erectile function. This innovative procedure allows for real-time assessment of prostate tissue during surgery. It provides a safer, more targeted method of treating prostate cancer. A new small trial involving 344 men compared the use of NeuroSafe with traditional standard surgery for prostate removal. The study found statistically significant advantages in preservation of erectile function post surgery.
Great news NeuroSafe almost doubles the odds that men will keep their erectile function compared to similar men having routine surgery. In the trial, the first half of participants who received the NeuroSafe procedure were on one side, with controls getting conventional surgery on the other side. The findings showed a dramatic difference in results. A whopping 56% of men who received conventional surgery experienced erectile dysfunction, compared to just 38% of men with the NeuroSafe procedure who had the same experience.
The trial found that 23% of men receiving conventional surgery had no erectile dysfunction or only mild impotence. Compared to 39% of men treated with NeuroSafe surgery having such outcomes. This unique animal study demonstrates the ability of NeuroSafe to significantly enhance post-surgery quality of life for patients afflicted by localized prostate cancer.
"This procedure gives surgeons feedback during the surgery to give them the certainty they need to spare as many nerves as possible and give men increased hope of recovering their sexual potency after their cancer is surgically removed." – Prof Greg Shaw
NeuroSafe is a revolutionary step forward in prostate cancer surgery. It addresses an urgent dilemma for oncological surgeons—eradicating the cancer while enabling patients to maintain optimal post-operative quality of life. This technique greatly reduces side effects associated with prostate surgery. Erection problems have been of great concern to both patients and healthcare providers for decades.
"Prostate cancer surgery is a life-saving option for lots of men, but it’s a major procedure that can cause side-effects like erection problems. A major challenge we face is how to cure men but also ensure they can live life to the full afterwards." – Dr Matthew Hobbs
While NeuroSafe has shown promising results, it’s not without its problems. As a significant and highly invasive surgical procedure, it is not without serious risks, side effects and comorbidities. Being able to do this while helping many men preserve erectile function is a significant advancement in the treatment of prostate cancer.
