Ontario Premier Cuts Ties with Musk’s Starlink Amid U.S. Tariff Dispute

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a significant decision to terminate a $100-million Canadian contract with Elon Musk's Starlink internet services. The agreement, signed last November, aimed to provide high-speed internet to remote communities in rural and northern Ontario. This strategic move comes in response to sweeping tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian goods.

Ford's decision is part of a broader retaliatory strategy against these tariffs. Ontario, along with other Canadian provinces, plans to remove American liquor brands from government store shelves. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario reports nearly $1 billion worth of American alcohol products are sold annually in the province.

"We just aren't going to be using American companies," – Ford

The Premier emphasized that U.S.-based businesses stand to lose "tens of billions of dollars" in potential new revenues due to Ontario's response. In a bid to bolster Canadian businesses, Ford encouraged companies to proudly display the Canadian flag on their products to guide consumer choices. Additionally, he announced a ban on American companies from provincial contracts.

"We'll be ripping up the province's contract with Starlink. Ontario won't do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy," – Ford

This development coincides with Ford calling an election for his province last week, where he declared his readiness to win the trade battle against the United States.

"Canada didn't start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we're ready to win it," – Ford

In response to the tariffs, both Canada and Mexico have ordered retaliatory measures on American goods. Trump criticized Canada's trade surplus with the U.S., suggesting that without it, Canada would struggle as a viable nation.

"Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!" – Trump

Ford dismissed Trump's claims, highlighting the negative impact of U.S. trade policies on American citizens and accusing Trump of undermining family incomes and businesses.

"This is a tax on American citizens. That's what Donald Trump is doing to his own people," – Ford

Ford underscored his commitment to supporting local industries, stating that whether constructing infrastructure or even a simple doghouse, Ontario will prioritize using its own resources.

"And no matter if we are building a hospital, if we're building anything, if we're building a dog house I want to make sure we are using Ontario steel, Canadian products, Canadian wood, Ontario wood, anything." – Ford
