In an extraordinary move, OpenAI has partnered with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). Together, we’re helping to shape a new era for the artificial intelligence community. OpenAI is planning to install 6 gigawatts of AMD’s advanced Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs) in a deal totaling several billions. This deployment will unfold over the next 5 or more years and 2 or more hardware generations. The contract includes a special 10-gigawatt slice of OpenAI’s sprawling 23-gigawatt infrastructure plan. That really speaks to the size and importance of our partnership. OpenAI’s new operational base in Abilene, Texas, has already been running on Nvidia chips as it builds out a new facility to quadruple its existing capacity. This expansion reflects OpenAI’s broader commitment to invest approximately $1 trillion in new buildouts within just the past two weeks.
That’s not to say their estimates are wrong—it would take just over $50 billion to build each gigawatt. This highlights the huge financial resources OpenAI is putting towards its infrastructure projects. The collaboration with AMD is a huge commercial success. Equally important, it reaffirms AMD’s next-gen Instinct roadmap.
AMD’s Instinct GPUs will first come onto the scene with a 1-gigawatt rollout. Looks like we’re finally on track to mark our calendars for the second half of 2026! Subsequent deployments will be on a rolling basis, releasing further tranches as OpenAI scales toward their full commit of 6-gigawatts. If OpenAI wallpapers its full warrant, OpenAI would receive ~10% ownership in AMD. This estimate assumes an even number of shares outstanding.
