Palm Bay Councilmember Faces Backlash for Derogatory Comments on Indian Community

Chandler Langevin, a city councilmember in Palm Bay, Florida, has reaped the political storm. Most recently, he was embroiled in controversy for racist tweets against Indian people, including calling Indian Imports “dot heads”. Over the last three weeks, Langevin released an unprecedented and defamatory series of incendiary attacks via X. He demeaned the religious and cultural practices of Indians living in the United States and effectively called for their mass deportation. These comments have been met with shock and anger from advocacy groups as well as politicians from both sides of the aisle across the state.

According to Langevin’s inflammatory posts, Indians were only coming to America to “absorb all of our resources” before returning to India. He speculated that others would come here, “or worse… to stay.” His comments were later classified as hate speech. They raised alarms over the potential damage such rhetoric has done—and continues to do—to the immigration debate across the country. Langevin was elected as a council member in Palm Bay last year. As a registered Republican, his statements today directly contradict leaders of his own party.

The Hindu advocacy organization Hindus for Human Rights responded with a letter condemning Langevin’s remarks as “overtly bigoted, dehumanizing, and dangerous.” The joint letter further urged Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to remove Langevin from his councilmember-at-large position.

Advocacy groups aren’t the only ones raising the alarm. Even prominent Florida Republicans, such as Representative Mike Haridopolos and Senator Rick Scott, have publicly condemned Langevin’s comments. They expressed concerns about how these statements would damage public trust and relationships with communities. They sadly underscored the greater danger to a broader bipartisan conversation on immigration.

Further amplifying the condemnation, Nikki Fried, chair of Florida’s Democratic Party, released a statement labeling Langevin’s comments as “vile and reprehensible.” She underscored the importance of aspirational political leadership to bring the country together instead of tear it apart in the language leaders use.

Backpedaling from the backlash, the Palm Bay city council moved quickly in response. They sought a vote and came to a 3-2 decision to formally censure Langevin for his comments. In response to the censure Langevin doubled down, saying that he wanted to create “discourse” on the topic of immigration. It is true that he has named the problem and his call for a conversation has struck a chord with many.

The Palm Bay community is very much looking forward to seeing how this upheaval affects Langevin’s role as an outcast city councilmember. We are particularly excited about its potential impact on the general political climate in Florida.
