Pelita Air Pioneers Sustainable Aviation Fuel Testing with Palm Oil

Pelita Air, a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina, is leading sustainable aviation production in Indonesia. The airline has initiated testing of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from palm oil, aiming to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the aviation sector. This initiative is being led in collaboration with our primary partners – Pertamina, Garuda Indonesia and Citilink.

The collaborative efforts are just the first step toward improving the sustainability of air travel in Indonesia. Pelita Air’s testing program is designed to assess the viability of palm oil-based fuels as a long-term solution for the aviation industry. By using palm oil, Pelita Air aims to provide greener and more environmentally friendly jet fuel compared to regular jet fuels.

The upcoming testing phase of the sustainable aviation fuel project is crucial. It involves rigorous assessments to ensure that the palm oil-derived fuel meets safety and performance standards required for commercial aviation. Pertamina has partnered with two of the country’s largest air carriers, Garuda Indonesia and Citilink. This joint effort further underscores their commitment to innovation and sustainable practices throughout their operation.

This initiative is smart and forward looking on many levels. Many countries are actively seeking alternatives to fossil fuels, particularly in sectors such as aviation, which is known for its significant carbon footprint. By exploring palm oil as a resource for SAF, Pelita Air is not only addressing environmental concerns but supporting the local economy through the palm oil industry.

Pelita Air is scheduled to complete testing in the coming years. From there, they’ll take steps toward commercialization. If successful, this test case could lead to wider adoption of sustainable fuels in Indonesia’s aviation sector.
