Pope Francis Battles Complex Lung Infection in Rome Hospital

Pope Francis finds himself in a critical condition following a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis. The 88-year-old pontiff remains hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he has been receiving treatment for a complex lung infection. This infection consists of viral, bacterial, and fungal components, along with pneumonia in both lungs. The Pope’s health condition has become increasingly precarious, requiring high flows of oxygen to aid his breathing.

The respiratory crisis began after a week-long bout of bronchitis worsened, leading to his admission to the hospital on February 14. During his stay, Pope Francis received blood transfusions as tests revealed a condition associated with anaemia. The Pope's chronic lung disease has compounded the seriousness of his current medical condition.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the head of medicine and surgery at Gemelli Hospital, emphasized the gravity of the situation.

Doctors have mandated "absolute rest" for the Pope as his health remains precarious.

The presence of pneumonia in both lungs, coupled with chronic lung disease, exacerbates the risk of germs entering his bloodstream, potentially leading to sepsis. This remains the most significant threat to his recovery. Reports indicate that Pope Francis is experiencing increased pain compared to the previous day.

Despite his critical condition, the Pope spent part of his day seated in an armchair, suggesting a slight respite from complete bed confinement. However, doctors anticipate he will remain in the hospital for at least another week as they closely monitor his recovery.
