Prince Andrew has taken a decision to renounce his royal titles and honour voluntarily, including the Duke of York. Yet he is under the most intense scrutiny ever over his radical past and current associations. Buckingham Palace is increasing the public pressure on him to vacate his now-famous home. He now lives in the 30-room Royal Lodge on Windsor Great Park.
The heat is on Prince Andrew to leave his Royal Lodge. This is unsurprising, as scrutiny has recently increased over his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Now his ties to Epstein are under renewed scrutiny. This sudden resurgence of interest comes on the heels of Virginia Giuffre’s memoir, Nobody’s Girl, in which she recounts her allegations that at age 17 she was trafficked by Epstein to have sex with Prince Andrew three times. Prince Andrew has never accepted these accusations. He continues to assert that he never had sex with Giuffre and did not engage in any activity connected to her trafficking.
In early 2022, Prince Andrew settled a civil assault lawsuit with Giuffre. He scrubbed clean millions of dollars without admitting liability. Giuffre, who sadly died by suicide at age 41 in April, had alleged sexual abuse against him. These allegations have been undermining the prince’s reputation for months now.
According to reports, Prince Andrew has consulted King Charles and the now Prince of Wales about this. He must have spoken to their leaders when working on his recent announcement. King Charles had already encouraged him to consider moving out of the Royal Lodge, at least temporarily. This request illustrates the royal family’s desire to separate him from the controversies that have swarmed him.
Prince Andrew cannot be kicked out of Royal Lodge, despite all this growing pressure. He has a “cast iron” Development Agreement with the Crown Estate for the site through 2078. This scheme is currently facing severe criticism. Critics most loudly object to the unusual “peppercorn” rent tenancy, which seemingly allows him to occupy the mansion for an annual fee of 1/100th of a dollar.
In an unfortunate unfolding of this situation, Buckingham Palace is said to be trying to get greater control over Prince Andrew’s accommodations. The palace’s efforts reflect a broader strategy to improve the monarchy’s public image amid ongoing challenges related to Prince Andrew’s past actions and associations.
