Remote Work on the Rise: 2024 Sees Surge in Job Listings

Remote job opportunities have surged in 2024, marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year. This growth has brought the number of remote job listings back to levels last seen in 2022. FlexJobs's database reveals that approximately 70% of these listings are for intermediate or experienced positions. However, only 8% of jobs on LinkedIn were remote as of December 2024, showing a notable decline from 18% in early 2022. Despite this, the demand for work-from-anywhere positions continues to grow, accounting for about 5% of all remote roles.

Product managers and software engineers are among the most sought-after remote roles, offering average salaries that exceed $100,000 in the U.S. Companies like Veeva, Invisible Technologies, Canonical, Social Discovery Group, Wikimedia Foundation, Chainlink Labs, Nethermind, Gamurs Group, and CloudLinux are leading the charge in hiring for such positions. FlexJobs conducted an analysis between January and December 2024 to identify these top companies based on their volume of remote, location-flexible job postings.

FlexJobs's career expert manager, Toni Frana, notes that trends such as digital nomadism and the availability of digital nomad visas are fueling demand for work-from-anywhere jobs. However, she also emphasizes the competitive nature of the marketplace.

"Trends like digital nomadism and the wider availability of digital nomad visas are driving demand for work-from-anywhere jobs — but the marketplace is still highly competitive," – Toni Frana, FlexJobs's career expert manager.

To increase their chances of securing a remote position, Frana advises job seekers to apply to at least two or three companies. Networking with employees at target organizations and seeking referrals can also be beneficial strategies.

The resurgence in remote job listings highlights the evolving landscape of the workforce. As companies continue to adapt to flexible work environments, opportunities for remote employment will likely expand further. This shift reflects a growing recognition of the benefits associated with allowing employees to work from anywhere.
