Rising Doubts: Australians Question US Reliability Under Trump Administration

In a significant shift of perception, many Australians, including the Australian government, are beginning to see the United States as an unreliable ally. Recent surveys reveal that 31% of Australians consider US President Donald Trump as the greatest threat to world peace, a sentiment that underscores growing concerns about the current US administration's foreign policy.

The survey results come at a time when only 16% of Australians share the Prime Minister's confidence in the "rock solid" Anzus treaty, a cornerstone of Australia's defense strategy. This dwindling faith is mirrored by half of the respondents expressing feelings of decreased security since Trump's election in 2024.

Interestingly, 27% of Australians view Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping as equal threats to global peace, highlighting a complex international landscape. Moreover, 44% of respondents believe Australia would benefit from pursuing an independent foreign policy, rather than relying heavily on traditional alliances.

Despite the historical alliance between Australia and the United States, only 35% of Australians favor a closer relationship with the US. The Trump administration's hesitation to provide Ukraine with a robust security guarantee and its threats to annex allies such as Canada and Greenland have raised eyebrows internationally. The decision to "pause" all military aid to Ukraine has further exacerbated concerns.

The ramifications extend beyond the Pacific, with European leaders increasingly losing faith in NATO's mutual security guarantees. This sentiment is echoed by Friedrich Merz, who stated:

"My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA… I never thought I would have to say something like this." – Friedrich Merz

In Australia, half of the survey respondents expressed a lack of confidence that Trump would defend their nation and its interests if threatened. This skepticism adds to the growing perception of the US as an unreliable partner in safeguarding global security.

The uncertainty surrounding the US role under Trump's leadership has led to an assessment that the administration poses a direct threat to global stability. As nations reassess their international alliances, Australia's strategic positioning continues to evolve amid these shifting geopolitical dynamics.
