Rising Terrorism Threat in Ukraine Linked to US-founded Group

The Base, a US-based neo-Nazi terrorist organization, is increasing its operational tempo as insurgents inside Ukraine. Their work has been especially concentrated on the westernmost of Ukraine’s oblasts, Zakarpattia. Since launching its operations in April, The Base aims to establish an all-white ethnostate, employing tactics that include targeted assassinations and attacks on critical infrastructure. This alarming advance underscores the expanding strength of the group and the need for more vigilance from Ukrainian officials.

Rinaldo Nazzaro, the American founder of The Base, originally began his network in the United States. Now he lives out his days in St. Petersburg, Russia, with his wife and family. Nazzaro’s background as a former Pentagon contractor working directly with US special forces is fascinating. It makes people wonder, particularly in light of the allegations about his ties to Russian intelligence. He has so far denied every connection – direct and indirect – with Kremlin operatives.

The Base’s activity extends all over the world, with hundreds of different cells in dozens of different countries. It has long been under fire from international watchdogs, having been labeled a terrorist organization by several foreign governments. Since 2018, the FBI has conducted a sweeping, aggressive counter-terrorism investigation into The Base. This whole of society approach has resulted in thousands of apprehensions in the United States and around the world.

Steven Rai, a specialist on extremist organizations, said they weren’t able to establish The Base’s participation in the just lately reported assassination of an SBU official. Nonetheless, this action is in accord with their threats from the past several months and demonstrates the extreme threat they represent.

On September 29, the Ukrainian security service (SBU) announced the assassination of Colonel Ivan Voronych. According to them, they carried out the given attack under orders from The Base, with funding and support from Russian special services. As a reaction to this incident, the SBU eliminated two of the suspects involved in the plan. This shocking twist is a powerful reminder of the persistent danger that The Base and its ilk continue to pose, even with The Base’s reach extending into Ukraine.

“The shooting of the SBU colonel is not the end, but only the beginning,” stated The Base’s Ukrainian cell via their Telegram channel. This declaration regiments their plans to go on with their brutal campaign targeting Ukrainian political actors and the country’s critical infrastructure.

The Base has been seriously recruiting members across the world on digital networks dependent almost entirely on Russian internet infrastructure. For example, their recruitment email addresses from a Mail.ru account, a service provider known to be closely linked to an ally of President Vladimir Putin. This heavy dependence on Russian resources both complicates the group’s operational picture and deepens our understanding of its support network.

“The Base has been highly active in Ukraine since March and has conducted at least 10 arson attacks targeting infrastructure and buildings throughout the country,” noted Steven Rai. These assaults signal the group’s willingness to cross the line into violence in order to achieve their goals.

Though Rinaldo Nazzaro’s influence over The Base is a little more indirect, since local members in Ukraine have since seized control of its operations. This highly decentralized structure makes it very difficult for authorities to destroy the organization and stop its criminal operations. The Base routinely threatens Ukrainian civil society and government officials with sabotage and assassination. This has led to a chilling effect and climate of fear across the nation.
