Roger Tooth, a London-based photography enthusiast, recently captured an extraordinary moment during his long-awaited visit to Antony Gormley’s renowned installation, Another Place. Just two miles out of Liverpool city, you’ll discover an equally breathtaking masterpiece along Crosby Beach. This unique installation features 100 lifesize cast-iron sculptures, which have been wowing visitors for two decades and make a beautiful juxtaposition with the ocean.
Along with his wife and close friends, Tooth set out on this creative journey to chew the cud on alternative approaches to an arty day. Drawing on this framework, the visit in October 2025 – right in the middle of the psychic storm created by the Storm Amy climate shock – was revelatory. Although the weather was tumultuous, the cohort couldn’t wait to enjoy Gormley’s work and discover more about the dramatic coastal topography.
“I was in Liverpool with my wife and friends for a weekend away, and Sunday was an arty day,” Tooth stated. His excitement really transported us all to that spirit of exploration that defines the experience of Gormley’s sculptures.
When photographing the installation, Tooth found himself most drawn to one specific sculpture to get a close-up shot. In a serendipitous turn of events, an adorable little white dog stormed through the door.
“I was taking a closeup of one of the sculptures when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a small white dog bounding towards me,” Tooth recalled. The chance meeting infused a delightful surprise and spontaneity into his creative process.
That photograph caught an incredible moment. Each of the dog’s four legs looked like it was running on air as it dashed off in front of us. Furthermore, this poetic visual representation resonated deeply with Tooth, stirring sensations similar to those inspired by Eadweard Muybridge’s revolutionary studies of movement.
“I felt a ‘Muybridge-like joy’ upon reviewing the photo,” Tooth expressed, highlighting the satisfaction that comes from capturing such a fleeting moment in time. The picture captures the dog’s exuberance and fun-loving spirit. It testifies to the tremendous harmony between art and nature that Gormley’s installation exemplifies.
Antony Gormley, who is celebrated for creating Gateshead’s iconic Angel of the North, has transformed Crosby Beach into a canvas of human form and emotion through Another Place. With each passing week, the installation continues to attract additional visitors from near and far.
